The Letter From Theophilus Msimangu (October 1st,1946)

Today, October 1st, 1946, I received a letter from one of my brothers of Christ from Johannesburg, Theophilus Msimangu. The letter said this young woman (Gertude Kumalo, my sister) is very sick, and therefore I ask you to come quickly to Johannesburg. Even before I opened this letter I had bad feelings about it. After reading this it confirmed my theory. So I told my wife about this letter and sge told me to go to Johannesburg with the money that was going to be used to send our son Absalom to St. Chad's (a school for blacks). I became angry at her remark and I asked her in a sharp tone "How could you say such a thing?" For my wife and I intended for a son to receive a proper education with this money. So my wife and I got into a heated argument over whether or not to use the money to go to Johannesburg. All I could think about is how my beloved wife could even think about using the money that we had saved up together to send Absalom to school. So eventually, we both calmed ourselves down knowing that neither one of us were going to win this argument., we decided to use the spare/emergency money that we keep in a tin can inside a cupboard in the kitchen. When we open the tin up we examine and count the dusty old notes inside. There were exactly twelve pounds, five shillings, and seven pence, but I insisted that I was not going to take more than eight pounds to Johannesburg to visit my sister. Tomorrow I will be off with my eight shillings heading to Johannesburg.

This is the Letter that I received
